The Japan-Virginia Society (JVS) was founded in 1988 with the sponsoring leadership of Governor Gerald L. Baliles (1986-1990) and Ambassador Nobuo Matsunaga from Japan. The Society is a non-profit, non-political, educational membership organization. Its mission is dedicated to developing international cooperation, cultural understanding and sensitivity, and trade and investment between the citizens and businesses of the country of Japan and the Commonwealth of Virginia. The Society and its programming are supported by a diverse membership of American and Japanese companies, economic development organizations, academic institutions, and individuals and families. New members of the Society are always welcome and if you or your organization have an interest in helping to bridge the Japanese and Virginia communities, please contact us concerning membership.

We provide Japanese and Mathematics education to K-9th grade children all in Japanese, in accordance with the government-standardized curriculum and textbook. This school was established in 1988. It is organized by the parents of the students and has been providing several courses:

  1. Pre-Kindergarden & Kindergarden
  2. These courses provide an opportunity to develop Japanese language skill for the children who speak Japanese as their first language or in their everyday lives.

  3. Elementary & Junior High School
  4. These courses provide an opportunity to study the "National Language" (Japanese) and Arithmetic/Mathematics based on the Japanese curriculum guidelines for children who speak Japanese as their first langauge or in their everyday lives.

  5. International Courses (7 to 17-year-olds)
  6. These courses provide an opportunity to learn Japanese as a second language and Japanese tradition and culture for children who are non-native speakers. We normally conduct 3 courses:

    • Basic (1 year)
    • This course is primarily focused on basic conversation in Japanese, including greetings, counting, and Japanese grammar. Students are encouraged to read and write Hiragana characters. The class will be conducted in both Japanese and English depending on the student's needs.

    • Middle (1 year)
    • This course is primarily focused on basic conversation in Japanese, including greetings, counting, and Japanese grammar. Students are encouraged to read and write Hiragana and Katakana characters, and Kanji characters at the very basic level. The class will be conducted in both Japanese and English depending on the student's needs.

    • Middle 2 (1 year)
    • This course is designed for students to be able to converse with greater ease and to write short sentences about their daily life in Japanese with sentence structures, grammar, Kanji characters at the student's grade level. The class is generally conducted mainly in Japanese.

Consular Services

  • The Society serves as an alliance partner for handling of Japanese Citizenship matters including the handling of passport and general concerns of Japanese living in Virginia.
